Other Characters: Hong Kong ([personal profile] bauhinia)

IC INFORMATION;
Character's Name: Will Solace
Age: 15/16 (ish)
Canon: Percy Jackson series (Percy Jackson and the Olympians + Heroes of Olympus)
Canon Point: End of book five of Heroes of Olympus: The Blood of Olympus (so essentially post-series)
Species: Demigod - human mother, godly father
Gender: Male
Orientation: Bisexual, though it's not overtly stated anywhere in the books. He's pretty unmistakably foreshadowed as/hinted to be a love interest for Nico di Angelo, so it's my belief that the author intended to portray him as having an interest in the same sex. He's only ~15 though, so there's very little likelihood that he'll ever have a spouse in HH.

History: Will's entry on the wiki.
Appearance: Linked above under age as well. Will looks like a surfer, according to Rick Riordan. He's tanned and blond and blue-eyed. Athletically built, he dresses casually and exudes a certain energetic and refreshing air (when he's not fighting monsters and the like).
Personality: A sort of preliminary note: though Will doesn't have a lot of "screen time" in the series, he shows up several times for some of the more memorable events - read: Final Battles - in both Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus. Given the action-oriented nature of the series, a number of these appearances are battle situations and the glimpses of his personality that we get are largely influenced by this. There's more than enough screen time to give us an idea of how he reacts and interacts in less stressful, more light-hearted situations as well though.

Some people would think Will's won the demigod lottery. Son of Apollo, god of the sun and poetry and music and a bunch of other cool-sounding stuff? Awesome! You get healing powers and you're athletic and musically gifted (if you're lucky)! The thing is, meeting Will, you don't really get the impression he'd argue with that assessment. He's not outwardly upset or discontented with his lot, though you could understand where he was coming from if he were, what with the absentee god-parent who left his mother and fathered kids with a bunch of other women and all.

As of the beginning of the second series, he's serving in a counselor capacity to his half-siblings and though he's young, he seems to take the responsibility well. When escorting newcomer Leo Valdez - a son of Hephaestus, not Apollo - around Camp Halfblood, he's at ease in his role as tour guide and patiently educates the other when questions or misunderstandings arise.

At one point, Leo "hallucinates" his old babysitter spoilers: it's Hera, this is that kind of series, and because Will cannot see her, this prompts his concern for Leo's well-being. Not surprising, considering Will is both a counselor and a medic. This is in spite of the fact that he's probably younger than Leo and a number of his fellow cabin-mates, so he's clearly comfortable interacting with and helping people both younger and older than himself. You could say he has a caring personality, which works in his favor since he devotes his time to healing others.

For Will, caring goes hand in hand with a protective streak. When he thinks Nico di Angelo has over-extended himself, he's not at all shy about telling him so and insisting that the son of Hades take a break. Nico himself assesses Will as "easygoing and laid back" prior to this encounter, but after they disagree on the issue of Nico's well-being, he revises his opinion, calling Will "stubborn and aggravating" because of his insistent focus on Nico's health.

In the same section of the book, Will also engages in a pretty reckless combat situation (charging the enemy at random in hopes of distracting them?), which Nico dubs "the stupidest diversion [he] could imagine." Will is sometimes not very subtle and seems to prefer the direct approach over being either excessively stealthy or covert. This sort of jives with his overall combat role, because being a medic doesn't exactly require the same kind of stealth as actual combat. Same for archery, which Will seems to regard as a minor skill, though he certainly utilizes it in battle.

This direct approach carries over in his personal interactions: he doesn't hesitate to call Nico out on his self-deprecating comments, he gets right up in people's faces when he disagrees with them or feels there's some piece of information it's crucial he impart - basically, not super respectful of personal boundaries, physical or otherwise (see: randomly grabbing Nico's hand).

In short, think of Will as a nice doctor who will hound you to eat your apple a day and possibly stick it right in front of your face if you refuse to cooperate. If you have some deep-seated apple trauma, he will be kind enough to respect that and then offer you an orange instead.

Also, he likes sometimes inappropriate nicknames for people (see: "Death Boy" for Nico). His sense of humor might be a tad warped.

Abilities: Oh boy. So, Will is a son of Apollo, the guy with the chariot and the horses and the sun? That's the one. As such, he has a few interesting skills/abilities.

First, he can heal people with the power of song. He sings to his dad, god of the sun, and people get healed, bam. It's not entirely clear how extensive this ability is, but it likely wouldn't matter in Holly Heights, because Apollo very likely won't be around/empowered to assist.

Second, he has audio-sonic abilities. What does this mean? It means he can whistle so loudly it will stun his opponents. It probably has other uses too, such as, 'getting people's attention from extreme distances.' A note: Will refers to this as "one of [his] few musical talents," so it may be fairly safe to assume that his first listed ability may not be the most pleasant thing to listen to (just sayin').

Third, he can curse people to speak in rhyming couplets for periods of several days and up to multiple weeks at a time. Most useful ability ever!

Fourth, he has some skill as an archer, though it's not his specialty and he's not as adept as some of his half-siblings. He is generally an athletic guy though and children of Apollo are, as a rule, gifted in this area.

He's also a medic at Camp Halfblood, so he has some knowledge when it comes to patching people up, magical daddy song of healing or no. He has stuff like magical healing gum.

Lastly, it's not an ability, per se, but Will, like all demigods, has both ADHD and dyslexia. Rick Riordan's in-world explanation for this is thus: demigods suffer from (presumably) what humans perceive to be ADHD due to their heightened sense for battle and combat reflexes. All demigods are born hardwired to read ancient Greek, thus, dyslexia.

Other: You can bet your butt I'm getting that rhyming ability back asap.

SAMPLES;
First Person: [ Hello, Holly Heights. Today, your video messages contain a missive from someone who looks like a very smiley beach bum. ] Hey there- my name's Will Solace. I can't really tell if this is part of the game or quest or what, but- [ He looks reasonably sheepish. ] if it is, then there's most likely no point introducing myself like that. It just seemed polite. We're nothing if we're not treating each other nicely, right? [ For some reason, that seems like the kind of thing you repeat after hearing an adult saying it over and over: a polite, but stern homily intended to improve the behavior of young people everywhere. ] I definitely don't want to antagonize anyone- [ "godly."

'Where was I,' he seems to be thinking. ]
Oh, right. In case I'm not alone here, I'm wondering if anyone has seen some friends of mine. They'd be teenagers mostly, possibly wearing orange shirts and necklaces like mine. [ He grabs the cord around his neck, adorned with several round beads, and aligns the camera with it. Except- ] They could also being wearing purple. Or togas? With tattoos on their forearms that say SPQR. [ Indicating his own forearm, he then shifts the camera, as if indicating that's about all he needs, when another thought occurs to him. ]

Oh yeah, and if you see a kid, about yea high- [ He brings a hand up to somewhere slightly above his shoulder (Will, he's not that small, you're just being dumb right now, and also, not a kid? He's technically way older than you!) ] and looking like he could benefit from some vitamin D, please tell him he's supposed to be resting.

[ He smiles, but it's one of those slightly ominous expressions that hints at concealed emotion. ] Doctor's orders, di Angelo.

Additionally: test drive top level.

Third Person: Well, it wasn't Camp, but it would probably do, Will thought to himself as he observed his new house, as assigned by this mysterious "landlord" guy. Thinking on it, he couldn't remember any gods that went by that nickname (or any other that implied real estate ownership, but hey what did he know). Hestia was the goddess of the home, but that was the only applicable member of the pantheon he could conceive of being presumed responsible for this... whatever this was.

Outside of any one of them feeling extra frisky one morning and cooking up a scheme involving kidnapping demigods just to keep from getting bored, that is.

"Well, it never gets boring for us, does it?" He addressed this comment to his keyring, smiling wryly. Not super cool to start talking to inanimate objects less than ten minutes into what could be the beginning of his very first official quest. If, indeed, that's what this was. He didn't remember being informed about a quest, but maybe he had selective amnesia of some kind. Reaching up, he felt his head for any kind of bump or injury - old doctorly habits die hard.

Fit as a fiddle, just like when he left Camp. As far as he could remember, again. He examined the keys a second time, then turned his attention once more to the note. As usual, it was not the easiest thing to decipher, courtesy of dyslexia resulting from a brain hard-wired to read another language, but he got the same basic feeling from it the second time. 'Hi, you got kidnapped, here's a house and a fancy car, enjoy your new life living on the set of the Stepford Wives!'

Tucking the key ring in his pocket, Will turned the attached credit card over in his hands. At least his kidnapper was kind enough to provide him money- and what? A driver's license and ID too? He did not remember sitting for that photo, so that was one more point for 'mysterious amnesia.' Either that or- was that the same photo from his ID at home? Hard to tell.
